Treating Your Heel Pain

Depending on your problem, your podiatrist may recommend one or more types of treatment. Medication, physical therapy, and exercise promote proper healing and may be all the care you will need. For many people with movement problems or uneven leg lengths, however, custom-made shoe inserts (orthodics) provide the most lasting results. In some cases, surgery offers the best solution. Your podiatrist will discuss the treatment plan with your physician if an ongoing health problem is contributing to your heel pain.

Immediate Care

  • Your podiatrist may suggest ways to lessen swelling so your foot can work more normally again. You can do some things at home.
  • Rest speeds healing and limits the risk of further damage. Your podiatrist will talk with you about which activities to limit.
  • Ice helps reduce swelling and control pain. Apply ice or cold packs as directed by your podiatrist.
  • Compression reduces swelling and support injured parts. Wrap your heel with an elastic bandage.
  • Elevation drains away excess fluid, which reduces swelling. Raise your foot slightly above heart level.
